Just My Luck by Emily Wood

From an Eight-Year Project to Fast-Tracked Romance

Did you know Emily's path to publishing completely shifted once she started reading romance? She actually spent eight years painstakingly writing and querying a women's fiction novel that didn't get picked up.

It wasn't until she read The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren that everything unlocked for her. She realized this was exactly what she wanted to write, and suddenly she couldn't write fast enough to keep up with all her amazing ideas!

She ended up writing, revising, and getting a book deal for her romance debut in just two years.

Just My Luck and Finding Yourself at Thirty

Her debut novel, Just My Luck, has such a fascinating origin story! The inspiration came during a family dinner when her aunt and uncle hypothetically asked her, "What would you do if you found out you were actually ours?" That sparked the core conflict for her main character, Sloan, a 30-year-old people-pleaser who discovers a massive family secret that pulls the rug out from under her.

Sloan retreats to a horse farm (a setting inspired by Emily's own childhood riding horses!) where she butts heads with Parker, a quiet, surly farmhand with a troubled background who refuses to let this "city princess" run him off.

I absolutely loved their banter and chemistry! Emily hopes this book reminds readers that it is never too late to reinvent themselves or to chase their own happily-ever-after, even if they are past thirty.

What to Expect in Her Books

If you pick up an Emily Wood book, she promises her readers these staples:

• Found Family: Emily loves exploring the dynamic of strong friendships and the families we build for ourselves rather than the ones we are born into.
• High Heat & Slow Burns: You can always expect open-door, steamy scenes in her books, though she admits she somehow always accidentally writes them as a slow burn!
• Humor and Shenanigans: She wants her books to provide a sense of escape and lightness, so there will always be plenty of banter, jokes, and pranks
  

Her morning routine: The very first thing she does when she manages to pry her eyes open is say hello and give kisses to her adorable Golden Mountain Doodle, Delta, who is always waiting outside her bedroom door.

Weirdest thing she owns: She is hyper-fixated on the show Ted Lasso! For the past two years, she has had a hand-painted replica of the iconic yellow "BELIEVE" sign taped above a door in her house, made as a sweet surprise by her husband.

Hidden Talents & Hobbies: Also inspired by Ted Lasso, she recently joined a couple of soccer leagues! She also enjoys hiking and does beautiful hand-lettering and calligraphy, a skill she actually gave to her character, Sloane.

Bucket List: She loves watching travel vlog videos and dreams of taking a trip to explore the rugged wilderness of Alaska.

Drink of choice: She is 100% a tea drinker and never acquired a taste for coffee. Her go-to is a simple English Breakfast or Orange Pekoe with milk and a little honey.

Emily is currently putting the finishing touches on her next book, releasing in Spring 2027, The Roommate Swap, which is an opposites-attract romantic comedy set in Toronto!

When she’s not writing or daydreaming about other people falling in love, there’s nothing she enjoys more than being at the lake with her husband and golden mountain doodle (although let’s be honest, she’s never really not writing).
